June 4, 2012

The men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships this week (June 6-9) in Des Moines, IA. The men's team will send six athletes and the 4x100m relay, while the women's squad will be sending three athletes and the 4x400m relay.

Heading into the meet, the men are ranked 24th in the final USTFCCCA poll. Competing for the men's squad will be Maxwell Dyce (200m), the 4x100m relay, Mike Woepse (pole vault), Matthew Kosecki (discus), Alec Faldermeyer (hammer), Derek Eager (javelin) and Marcus Nilsson (decathlon). All of the men's competitors except for Nilsson advanced to the NCAA Championship after competing at the NCAA Preliminary Round two weeks ago in Austin. Nilsson qualified based off of his position on the descending order list.

Faldermeyer will be vying for the fourth NCAA honor of his career after earning accolades in both the 2011 indoor and outdoor seasons and the 2012 indoor season. Woepse heads into the meet with the top vault mark in the country (18-2.50) after the No. 1 vaulter no-heighted at the NCAA Preliminary Round.

Nilsson could contend for a top eight finish if he is on in the pole vault. Kosecki will also contend for a top eight finish after surpassing 190-feet in the discus in his last two competitions. Dyce posted two season-best marks at the NCAA Preliminary Round to advance to NCAAs and will again look to drop his time and advance through the meet. The 4x100m relay team has done well despite losing a key member of the foursome to injury (Karlto Rolle). They will be in contention for a spot in the final as well.

On the women's side, the Bruins will send Turquoise Thompson (400m hurdles), Kylie Price (long jump), Ida Storm (hammer) and the 4x400m relay team to Des Moines. Thompson was the runner-up in the hurdles at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championship and will again be gunning for a top three finish. Storm threw a lifetime-best of 218-1 in the hammer this past weekend and will be looking to earn more hardware for her collection. Price, who is just a freshman, has already surpassed the 21-foot barrier and will look to continue that improvement at NCAAs.

TELEVISION/WEBSTREAMING: ESPNU will televise Saturday's action from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (CT). The entire event will be streamed live through ESPN3.com, with the exception of Wednesday, June 6, which will be streamed at www.NCAA.com. It is available for free.
