Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - Jodie Legaspi had two of UCLA's three hits, including her sixth homer of the season, but fifth-ranked Arizona used a 14-hit barrage and took advantage of five Bruin errors to defeat 11th-ranked UCLA on Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium, 11-2.

UA improves to 26-8, 2-1 Pac-10, while UCLA falls to 25-9, 1-2 Pac-10.

Arizona threatened right away as Caitlin Lowe singled on the second pitch of the game and stole second base. Two batters later, Kristie Fox lined to left field, where UCLA's Krista Colburn made an incredible running catch and threw to second base to double-off Lowe to end the frame. The Bruins would make it back-to-back innings with a double play as UA's Jenae Leles opened the second with a single only to be erased on a 5-4-3 twin killing.

UCLA answered in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single by Colburn, who also stole second base. After a one-out walk to Lisa Dodd, Legaspi singled through the left side to bring home Colburn with the game's first run.

UA again put runners in scoring position in the third inning as K'Lee Arredondo singled and Adrienne Acton got aboard on a throwing error by UCLA hurler Anjelica Selden. However, Selden fanned Lowe on three pitches and got a popup by Chelsie Mesa to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.

The Bruins would take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Legaspi knocked one just beyond the left-center field wall in what would eventually become the last UCLA batter to reach base on the afternoon.

The flood gates opened in the fifth inning as UA's Sarah Akamine reached on a Dodd error to open the inning and the `Cats would put runners on the corners with two outs for Lowe, who bounced to Burney at third, but the Bruin freshman was unable to handle the grounder for an error, allowing UA's first run of the game to score. Mesa followed with an RBI single before Fox launched one over the left field wall for a three-run homer and a 5-2 Arizona lead.

UA added three more runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings as the Wildcats and Bruins split the two games at Easton Stadium on the weekend. All nine UA batters had at least one hit for the game, including a three-hit performance by Acton.

Selden (13-5) took the loss for UCLA, allowing 10 hits and eight runs, five of which were unearned, with no walks and five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Megan Langenfeld tossed the final 1 2/3 innings for the Bruins, allowing four hits and three runs, only one of which was earned, before fanning the final two batters she faced. Taryne Mowatt (19-7) picked up the win for UA, allowing three hits and two runs with one walk and five strikeouts in a complete game victory.

UCLA is back in action on Fri.-Sat., April 6-7, hosting the Washington Huskies. Friday's game is slated for 1 p.m. while Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Easton Stadium.
