The second-ranked UCLA men's golf team prepares for the 33rd Insperity Augusta State Invitational, Apr. 2-3, at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, GA.
Top-ranked Oklahoma State headlines a field that includes Augusta State, No. 3 Alabama, No. 11 Illinois and No. 22 Washington. According to the latest Golfstat rankings, seven of the top 10 individuals will be in the field, including UCLA's Patrick Cantlay, ranked No.1, and Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlien, the defending U.S. Amateur champion. In addition, 10 of the nation's top 50 teams and 14 of the top 30 individuals will be in action.
Augusta State is the defending champion after registering a tournament-record winning total of 47-under par 817. Jaguar All-American Henrik Norlander claimed medalist honors with a final-round 65 and 54-hole total of 15-under 201.
The UCLA lineup will consist of two juniors, a sophomore and two freshmen. Cantlay, 26-under par through 21 rounds this season, will play in the top spot, followed by sophomore Pontus Widegren, ranked 23rd nationally. Junior Gregor Main, ranked 28th in the nation, will play in the No.3 slot, followed by 2010 All-Pac-10 1st Team selection, Alex Shi Yup Kim, a junior. Freshman Anton Arboleda will play at No.5. Finally, sophomore Pedro Figueiredo will compete as an individual.
This season, the Bruins have won the Gifford Collegiate Championship (November) and the Battle at the Beach (February), in addition to finishing second in three other events. Cantlay has set a UCLA freshman record by winning three tournaments this season.
The Insperity ASU Invitational, presented by Spark Energy and Mercedes-Benz of Augusta, tees off at 8:30 a.m., Saturday morning with 36 holes of play at Forest Hills. Sunday's third and final round gets underway at 9:00 a.m. Forest Hills GC will play to a par of 72 over 7,029 yards.
