The Bruin cross country teams begin the post season on Friday as they head to Long Beach for the 2009 Pac-10 Championships. The men will race first at 3:00 pm, while the women will follow at 4:00 pm. The location of the race is at the Sky Links Golf Course.
Last season, the Bruin men finished fifth with 106 points, just two points shy of a top three finish. The women finished 10th last season with 271 points.
The men will be paced by seniors Marco Anzures, Alex Crabill and Marlon Patterson, the top runners for the Bruins this season. Behind this trio is a solid group of competitors in juniors Jake Matthews and Kevin Sullivan, sophomores Spencer Knight and David McDonald and freshmen Zack Torres and Mohamed Abdalla. This group of runners will look to finish in the upper half of the conference meet on Friday.
On the women's side, junior Shannon Murakami will lead as she has been UCLA's top runner all season long. Murakami will definitely be in the hunt for All-Pac-10 honors as the women will be looking to move out of the bottom spot in the conference.
Behind Murakami are sophomores Katja Goldring and Sadee Martinez and junior Kelcie Wiemann, who have traded off running in the No. 2 through No. 4 spots throughout the season. Senior Rosa Magana and sophomore Taryn Pastoor will also add depth to the group. Freshmen Heather Balbier, Allie Lopez and Shadeh Tabatabai will also look to help move the Bruins up in the team standings.
The women's race will also give the Bruins a chance to pick up five Lexus Gauntlet Points if they finish ahead of the Trojans in the team standings.
