Senior Stephanie Kono led a contingent of four current or former UCLA players after the first round of Stage Three at the LPGA Qualifying Tournament in Daytona Beach, FL.

Kono fired a first-round 67 (-5) and was in second place, one shot behind professional Christine Song, who posted a 66 (-6) at the Champions Course.

Former Bruins Maria Jose Uribe (71, -1) and Hannah Jun (73, +1) were tied for 13th and 37th, respectively, followed by current senior Brianna Do, who was tied for 116th after posting a 78 (+6).

Kono bogeyed No. 2 after she failed to get up and down for par from a bunker. But the three-time, first-team All-American rolled in birdies on her next three holes from three feet, 12 feet and one foot, and then completed her round with birdies on her last two holes to draw within a shot of the lead.

"It feels good to get off to a solid start, but I have to stay patient," said Kono, who turned 22 last Sunday. "There are still a lot of holes to play."

After 72 holes, the 139-player field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties for the final 18 holes. Players making the cut will compete in the final round on the LPGA Champions Course. The top 40 players and ties following Sunday's round will receive 2012 LPGA membership.
