TUCSON, Ariz. - UCLA has been ranked No. 18 in Collegiate Baseball's preseason poll, the weekly baseball newspaper announced this week. This marks UCLA's highest preseason ranking by Collegiate Baseball since the Bruins were tabbed No. 4 prior to the 1999 season.
UCLA joins four other Pac-10 programs rated among the top-40 by Collegiate Baseball. Arizona has been selected the preseason No. 1 program, and conference rival Arizona State has earned a No. 3 ranking. Defending national champion Oregon State is slotted No. 19, and California has been ranked No. 39.
The Bruins will play 25 games against teams ranked in Collegiate Baseball's preseason top-40 poll. Overall, UCLA's schedule features 42 of 56 regular-season games against teams receiving votes in the preseason poll.
UCLA returns seven regular starters from its 2007 batting lineup and welcomes back two of its three weekend starters (junior Tim Murphy and sophomore Gavin Brooks). The Bruins welcome back 22 letterwinners and 12 newcomers in 2008.
The Bruins' 2008 campaign kicks off with a three-game series against Oklahoma on Friday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m.
