LOS ANGELES - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 7 UC Irvine by an 8-7 margin in an MPSF match on Saturday evening at UCI's Anteater Pool. Junior Ben Hohl and sophomore Brett Hays led the Bruins (14-5, 1-2) with three goals each.
UCLA took a 7-2 lead on a goal by Hohl with 3:32 to play in the third quarter before UC Irvine (13-6, 1-1 MPSF) mounted a strong comeback.
UC Irvine's Brandon Johnson scored on a penalty shot with 57 seconds to play in the third period, reducing UCLA's lead to 7-3 entering the final quarter.
The Anteaters scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter on goals from Trent Baxter (6:48), Johnson (5:24), Baxter again (3:48) and Doug Lindsey on a 6-on-5 opportunity at the 2:38 mark to draw even at 7-7.
Hohl scored on an extra-man opportunity with 1:46 remaining to put UCLA ahead 8-7.
UC Irvine went on a power play in the final minute but failed to convert before UCLA ran out the clock.
UCLA senior goalkeeper Chay Lapin was credited with four saves, and UC Irvine's Matt Johnson registered four stops in the cage.
The Bruins return to action against Pacific (1 p.m.) and Chapman (3:30 p.m.) in a doubleheader at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center on Sunday.
