UCLA Rowing Announces Seven Signees for 2009-10

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA rowing program has signed seven talented high school rowers to National Letters of Intent, head coach Amy Fuller Kearney announced this week. The group of seven student-athletes will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2009.

"We are thrilled about this recruiting class," Fuller Kearney said. "All of these young women will have an immediate impact on our program. They all bring a great combination of academic pride and athletic drive, a competitive spirit and, of course, Bruin pride. This will be a class to watch."

The group of seven signees includes four high school rowers from California, one from Washington, D.C., one from New Jersey and one from Minnesota.

The UCLA rowing program has concluded its fall practice, finishing the fall season with encouraging results at the Head of the Marina and the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival. UCLA kicks off its spring campaign on March 7, hosting Loyola Marymount University in Marina del Rey, Calif.

Has rowed in Capital Crew's top crew since her sophomore year...during the summer of 2007, attended the USRowing Women's Junior National Team Development Camp, focusing primarily on sculling...captured a silver medal in the junior B quad at the USRowing Club National Championships...in the summer of 2008, made a return engagement to the development camp, primarily in sweep rowing...enjoyed good success in intermediate-level events at the USRowing Club National Championships.

Oakland Strokes

Currently in third year as a coxswain for the Oakland Strokes rowing program...at the end of her first year with Oakland Strokes, was the recipient of the Novice Coach's Award...attended the 2008 USRowing Women's Junior National Team Development Camp...additionally, has spent eight years as a successful figure skater...active in the community through the National Charity League...member of the Piedmont High School honor society.

The Peddie School

Attends The Peddie School (Highstown, N.J.)...in first year at Peddie, helped team capture the silver medal at the 2008 USRowing Youth National Championships...in the fall of 2008, helped her crew place third in the youth four event at the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston...prior to transferring to Peddie, rowed for her hometown Nutley High School team.

A talented scholar-athlete at Peninsula High School, has played volleyball and basketball in addition to rowing...an accomplished middle blocker for the Peninsula girls' volleyball team...has also played on Peninsula's girls' basketball team...developed her rowing skills at numerous local rowing clubs and will compete for the Marina Aquatic Center upon the completion of the fall volleyball season...has older and younger sisters involved in the sport of rowing.

Has competed in both open weight and lightweight events...as a junior, won the gold medal at the USRowing Southwest Region Junior Championships as part of the Los Gatos Rowing Club's lightweight eight...doubling up into the open weight eight, helped guide Los Gatos to a silver medal at the championships in Sacramento...that crew went on to win a silver medal at the 2008 USRowing Youth National Championships and a gold medal at the Henley Women's Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England...as a sophomore, won two gold medals at the USRowing Southwest Region Junior Championships (lightweight eight and second varsity eight) and a national championship in the lightweight eight in Cincinnati...prior to pursuing rowing full-time, played on the Los Gatos High School volleyball team.

Britta Syverson
Minneapolis, Minn. (Southwest HS)
Minneapolis Rowing Club

Began rowing the summer before her junior year and quickly found success rowing for the Minneapolis Rowing Club...competed in the top Minneapolis Rowing Club crews at that summer's Royal Canadian Henley Regatta...that fall, helped her team place sixth in the youth four event at the 2007 Head of the Charles Regatta...after a successful spring racing season, is now competing in her second season with the Minneapolis Rowing Club...helped her team place seventh at the fall 2008 Head of the Charles in Boston...has competed for Southwest High School's volleyball and basketball teams...has earned distinction in the classroom as an Honor Roll selection...has an older brother, Alex, who rows for Pac-10 competitor Stanford.
