LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomore Brooke Martin scored a career-high four goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team past Santa Clara, 11-2, in a first-round match of the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego's Triton Pool on Saturday morning.
UCLA (9-1) registered its ninth victory in its first 10 matches, opening the first quarter with a 2-0 lead.
Martin was accompanied by six other UCLA goal scorers. Sophomore Emily Greenwood tallied two goals, while seniors Kelsey McGinley, Priscilla Orozco and Noel Umphrey, junior KK Clark and sophomore Nicole Barker each scored one goal.
The Bruins led 5-1 at halftime and outscored the Broncos, 4-0, in the third quarter to enter the final period with a commanding 9-1 lead. UCLA added two more goals in the fourth quarter to win, 11-2.
Orozco and Clark each scored one goal to remain tied for team lead with 20 goals this season.
Barker registered her first goal of the season in UCLA's first-round victory.
Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement netted six saves in the cage, allowing just two goals against Santa Clara.
UCLA will play No. 14 Hartwick on Saturday at 3:10 p.m. in a second-round Triton Invitational contest. The winner of Saturday's afternoon match will advance to a semifinal contest on Sunday at 11:10 a.m.
