LOS ANGELES - No. 1 UCLA women's water polo defeated No. 5 San Diego State, 17-5, Saturday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Junior Katie Rulon led the Bruins with five first-half goals, and senior Gabrielle Domanic registered three goals in the MPSF victory.
UCLA (25-0, 11-0 MPSF) received goals from 10 Bruins, as freshman Megan Burmeister chipped in with two. Rulon scored the game's first two goals, handing UCLA a 2-0 lead. After a goal from San Diego State's Jenna Schuster, narrowing the Bruins' margin to 2-1, UCLA used an 8-0 run to assume a 10-1 lead before halftime. The Bruins led, 11-1, after two quarters.
The Bruins outscored the visiting Aztecs (25-4, 7-3 MPSF) by a 3-0 margin in the third quarter. Both teams added three goals in the fourth quarter. Burmeister's two goals came in the second half - one with 4:18 to go in the third quarter and another with 3:34 remaining in the contest.
Junior Brittany Fullen continued UCLA's strong play in the final two quarters as she notched eight saves in the second half. Fullen finished with 13 stops in the cage.
San Diego State was led by Ronni Gautschi and Schuster, as each player tallied two goals. Aztec goalkeeper Heather Fenske finished with five saves in the cage.
