Release:  09/20/2012

Sept. 20, 2012

UCLA senior punter Jeff Locke has been named as one of 30 candidates for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

Locke, who is listed on the Ray Guy Watch List as a candidate for the award which honors the nation's best collegiate punter, was named UCLA's male Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2011-12 after compiling the highest gpa of any male student-athlete. He is one of six current UCLA athletes to have been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each quarter of his attendance at the university. Locke has also taken part in numerous community service projects during the course of his Bruin career. He began the 2012 football season with the highest career punting average in UCLA history.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

From the list of 30 football candidates, a national media committee will select ten finalists for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award in October. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.
