10th-Ranked Bruins Come Up Just Short Against #5 Stanford

Oct. 26, 2008

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Seniors Ali Daley and Nellie Spicer both recorded double-doubles on Sunday, but the 10th-ranked Bruins lost in four sets to #5 Stanford at Pauley Pavilion. Scores were 25-22, 14-25, 22-25, 23-25.

The Bruins drop to 14-6 overall and 4-5 in Pac-10 play, while the Cardinal improve to 17-3 and 8-1 in league action.

Daley paced the Bruins with 16 kills, also adding 13 digs, while Spicer notched 44 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Amanda Gil (12) and sophomore Dicey McGraw (10) each had double figures in kills. Senior Jessica Fine recorded 18 digs. UCLA hit .258 as a team.

A tremendous offensive display by both teams in the opening set resulted in a UCLA victory. Neither team led by more than three in a set that featured five ties and three lead changes. Tied at four, the Cardinal scored two in a row to lead 6-4. Stanford maintained its lead at 10-9, when UCLA scored three straight to go up 12-10. A Cardinal service error began the run, which was followed by a kill by McGraw and a combo block by Daley and freshman Katie Camp.

UCLA never trailed for the rest of the set. Stanford got as close as one on six occasions, but could not tie it up. With the Bruins holding a 22-21 advantage, consecutive kills by Daley and McGraw gave them set point. While the Cardinal staved off the Bruins' first set point, McGraw won the opener on a kill to give UCLA the 25-22 victory. Daley had five kills with no hitting errors in 11 attempts in the opener, while Gil, McGraw and freshman Sara Sage each had three kills. Both teams had outstanding attack percentages, with the Bruins out-hitting the Cardinal .438 to .424.

The Bruins scored the first point of the second set, but it was all Cardinal after that. Stanford netted the next six points to take a 6-1 advantage and never looked back. UCLA got no closer than four the rest of the way, as Stanford built its lead up to as many as 11 on two occasions. On their second set point, a kill by Erin Waller gave the Cardinal the 25-14 victory. The Cardinal hit even better in the second set than in the first with 18 kills and just one error in 33 swings for a .515 hitting percentage. The Bruins dropped to a .125 attack in the second, as Daley and Gil paced UCLA with three kills apiece.

UCLA's only lead in the third set was early on at 2-1, but Stanford came back with four of the next five points to go ahead 5-3. Leading 7-6, the Cardinal reeled off four in a row to take an 11-6 edge. UCLA responded with five of the next six to cut its deficit to one at 12-11. Sage had two kills during the run, Daley added another and Gil posted a kill and a block. Stanford came back with a 4-1 run of its own to bring its lead up to four again at 16-12.

Stanford still led 20-18 when UCLA scored two in a row on back-to-back kills by Daley to even things at 20. However, the Cardinal scored five of the set's last seven points to win it 25-22. Cynthia Barboza won the set on a kill to give Stanford the 2-1 match lead. Daley had five kills in the third, while Gil and McGraw had three each. UCLA out-hit Stanford by a slim margin, .302 to .298.

The Cardinal led for the majority of the fourth set, but a nice run by the Bruins made things interesting at the end. Stanford jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead and saw its advantage get to as high five on five occasions. Trailing 22-17, the Bruins made their run and eventually took their first lead of the set. Daley started the run with a kill and following a Stanford attack error, a Spicer kill made it 22-20. Freshman Lainey Gera then served an ace to bring the Bruins to within one. Daley had another kill to tie it up and a Stanford attack error gave the Bruins a 23-22 advantage, forcing the Cardinal into a timeout.

Out of the break, Foluke Akinradewo tied it back up with a kill and Alix Klineman served an ace to give Stanford match point. On one of the longest rallies of the match, Barboza clinched it for the Cardinal with a kill to give them the 25-23 win. The Bruins out-hit the Cardinal .205 to .130 in the fourth. Daley and Gil each had three kills for UCLA in the third.

Barboza led both teams with 20 kills, also adding 22 digs. Klineman had 17 kills and 14 digs, while Akinradewo and Waller each recorded 10 kills. Stanford hit .321 as a team.

The Bruins continue their four-match homestand on Friday when they host Oregon State at 7 p.m. Gametracker and live audio will be available on UCLABruins.com.
