La Jolla, Calif. - Junior Marco Santos scored a season-high three goals as the third-ranked UCLA men's water polo team fell to fourth-ranked UC San Diego, 13-12, before a record-setting crowd of 1,740 at Canyonview West Pool. UC San Diego (15-2) defeated UCLA (6-2) for the first time in program history, as the Bruins had won all 43 preceding matches.
Tied 12-12 in the final minute, junior Adnan Jerkovic lobbed a floating shot with 28 seconds remaining to give UC San Diego the lead. When Santos' four-meter shot narrowly missed the cage, Jerkovic's goal (his sixth of the evening) proved to be the gamewinner.
The Bruins took a 3-1 lead with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter on one of junior Matt Jacobs' two goals before UC San Diego cut UCLA's lead in half, 3-2, at the end of the first frame. Both teams continued exchanging goals in the second quarter, tying the game 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 before seniors Logan Powell and Grant Zider scored in the final 1:15 to hand the Bruins an 8-6 halftime advantage.
UC San Diego stymied the Bruin offense in the third quarter, limiting the road team to two third-quarter goals. Jerkovic slammed home his fifth goal of the evening at 1:25 in the third quarter, tying the score, 9-9. With 10 seconds remaining in the third frame, senior Michael March scored his first goal of the evening, lifting the Bruins to a 10-9 lead.
The Tritons answered quickly in the fourth quarter with three goals in the first 4:05 to take a 12-10 advantage, their largest lead of the game. UCLA battled back with goals from Powell (3:42) and March (1:01), to tie the contest, 12-12. Jerkovic took over for UC San Diego in the final minute to seal the victory for UC San Diego.
The Bruins host their annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, Calif. Game time is 12 p.m.
