LOS ANGELES - Head UCLA men's tennis coach Billy Martin landed two of the nation's top junior players on Wednesday, as Daniel Kosakowski and Clay Thompson both signed national letters of intent to join the Bruins in the fall of 2010.
Kosakowski, out of Warren High School in Downey, Calif., is currently listed at No. 5 nationally and No. 2 in the state of California in the TennisRecruiting.net 2010 Rankings. He is coming off an impressive 2009 season, reaching the round of 16 in singles at both the USTA Boys' 18s National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., and the ITF Easter Bowl in Palm Springs, Calif. He also won the singles title at the Southern California Junior Sectionals in July. He is one of just 14 players in history to win the SCTA Junior Sectional Triple Crown, as he recently added doubles and mixed doubles titles to his singles win. His 2009 junior record to date is 46-18. Kosakowski will be the third member of his family to play college tennis, as his brother, Marcin, played at UC Santa Barbara, and his sister, Sylvia, was a standout at Pepperdine. Daniel is currently ranked No. 11 in the USTA Boys' 18s Division.

Thompson, who attends the Crossroads School in Santa Monica, Calif., is listed as the No. 10 recruit in the country (No. 4 in California) according to TennisRecruiting.net. He captured the 2009 CIF Southern California Singles Championship in May and, like Kosakowski, also reached the round of 16 in singles at the 2009 Easter Bowl. He won two USTA Boys' 18s National Open Championships this year, winning in Honolulu in February and again in Lakewood, Calif. in May. He also reached the doubles final in Honolulu. Thompson was a semifinalist in singles at the USTA Winter National Championships in Arizona in January of this year, was a quarterfinalist at the USTA Boys' 16s Nationals in 2008. He is currently ranked No. 14 in the USTA Boys' 18s Division. His record in 2009 stands at 43-12.
Both Kosakowski and Thompson helped the Southern California Section reach the final at the 2009 USTA Boys' 18s National Team Championships in Urbana, Ill.
"I'm just very excited to get two top Southern California boys who I believe will contribute greatly to our program for the next several years," said Martin. "Clay is about the same age as my son, so I've known him since he's been about nine or 10 years old. I've been able to watch his development through the years and I know we are getting a special player. Daniel has really taken off over the last year and a half and has posted some outstanding results. He possesses a fantastic work ethic and is a tribute to the type of player who I like to have on my teams. He will be a leader on and off the court for this program."
