LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team used a 7-0 scoring run to open the game and held on for a 15-6 victory over No. 12 Hartwick on Thursday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
Senior Tanya Gandy and sophomore Megan Burmeister each recorded one pair of goals, as sophomores Kelly Easterday, Kelsey McGinley and Noel Umphrey and freshmen KK Clark and Sarah Orozco all scored one goal.
UCLA outscored Hartwick by a 7-0 margin in the first quarter, scoring its first goal just 28 seconds into the match on a strike from Rulon. Subsequent Bruin goals by Rulon (6:03), Easterday (3:39) and Belden (3:02) push the margin to 4-0. UCLA added three goals in the final 2:07 of the opening frame.
Hartwick scored its first goal of the afternoon on a shot by Christina Evans with 6:04 to play in the second quarter. After Gandy netted UCLA's eighth goal, Hartwick's Jessica McKee scored her first of two goals on the day. UCLA led by an 8-2 margin at halftime.
The Bruins outscored the visiting Hawks, 5-2, in the third quarter. Both teams added two goals in the final frame.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen recorded seven saves in the cage for the host Bruins. Hartwick's Jessica Dorman tallied four stops in goal.
