San Diego, Calif. - Playing in just their first college tournament together, UCLA freshmen Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton made a big statement on Sunday, claiming the doubles title at the 2011 USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Anderson and Morton, seeded 10th in the 64-team doubles draw, began the day with an 8-2 semifinal win over Jamie Pawid and Katarina Poljakova of Hawai'i. The Bruin duo then came back later in the day to pull off an upset in the final, downing second-seeded Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of USC, 8-4.
In addition to their victory over the No. 2 seeds, Anderson and Morton also knocked off top-seeded Alejandra Granillo and Khunpak Issara of Pepperdine in the round of 16.
By claiming the title, Anderson and Morton earn an automatic berth into next month's USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Flushing, NY.
