ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo earned a pair of victories on the first day of its regular season at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday. The Bruins defeated Colorado State, 9-4, in the morning before cruising past No. 10 Indiana, 10-5, that evening.
UCLA led by a 3-2 margin after the first quarter and outscored the Rams in the second period, 3-1, to secure a 6-3 halftime cushion. The Bruins blanked Colorado State, 2-0, in the third period. Both teams traded one goal in the final quarter.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement was credited with 10 saves for UCLA. Colorado State goalkeeper Melissa Fisher registered 11 stops in the cage.
In the evening, UCLA received a game-high four goals from Clark in a 10-5 win over Indiana. Sarah Orozco and Emily Donohoe each scored two goals, while Emily Greenwood and Becca Dorst each scored one goal.
Indiana was led by two goals from Shae Fournier.
The Bruins and Hoosiers each scored two goals in the opening quarter. UCLA outscored Indiana in the second frame, 3-1, and held the Hoosiers to just two goals after halftime. The Bruins put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter by outscoring Indiana, 4-1.
Dement recorded 10 saves in four quarters against the Hoosiers. Indiana goalkeeper Liza Dernehl was credited with eight stops.
UCLA returns to action against Michigan on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. (PT)/10:30 a.m. (ET).
