Los Angeles, Calif. - Junior Chandler Hoffman scored his third goal of the season while sophomore Kelyn Rowe recorded his first to lead the Bruins to a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's in the home opener at North Athletic Field.
The best chance either team saw in the first half belonged to Saint Mary's, as midfielder Julian Godinez dribbled up the left side and put a shot on net towards the far post. But Bruin goalkeeper Earl Edwards made a nice diving stop and controlled the rebound to keep the teams scoreless.
After going into the half tied 0-0, the Bruins came out in the second half and immediately jumped on the Gaels, getting a nice goal from Chandler Hoffman that was set up by assists from Eder Arreola and Shawn Singh. Hoffman has now scored in three consecutive matches and has nine goals in his last 10 games for the Bruins. Kelyn Rowe followed that up with a beautiful goal in the 73rd minute, blasting a shot from just outside the right edge of the box into the far post for his first goal of the season. The Gaels would not go down lightly though, as in the 86th minute off of a corner kick, defender Bobby Conner picked up the rebound off a blocked shot and put it past Edwards to cut the deficit to one. But the Gaels would not find another scoring chance the rest of the match and UCLA held on to secure its first win of the season.
Overall, the two teams were even in shots, putting up 11 each with Earl Edwards making one save to earn his first win of the year.
UCLA now improves to 1-2-1 on the season and will face the Loyola Marymount Lions (2-2-0) on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 4:30 pm out at the North Athletic Field.
