CINCINNATI - Former UCLA baseball player Josh Roenicke has been promoted to the Cincinnati Reds, becoming the 56th former Bruin on record to advance to the major leagues. Roenicke played at UCLA from 2003-2006, splitting time as an outfielder and pitcher.

In three seasons of minor league baseball, Roenicke has soared through the Cincinnati Reds' farm system. Selected in the 10th round of the 2006 MLB Draft by Cincinnati, Roenicke spent the 2006 minor league season playing in rookie ball before jumping from single-A to double-A in 2007.

This summer, the hard-throwing right-handed pitcher has logged a 2.80 ERA, a 6-2 record and 13 saves in 57 relief appearances. Roenicke has recorded 71 strikeouts and 26 walks in 61.0 innings - he pitched in 22 games for Chattanooga (double-A) before making 35 appearances for Louisville (triple-A).

Playing in the International League for the Louisville Bats, Roenicke has compiled a 2.54 ERA, a 2-0 record and three saves in 39.0 innings. Roenicke has logged 43 strikeouts, 14 walks and a .234 opponent batting average with the Bats.

A two-way player at UCLA, Roenicke logged 14 strikeouts in 15.1 innings in two seasons (2004, 2006). The right-hander from Nevada City, Calif., made 16 of his 19 career appearances as a senior, totaling a 2-3 record and 3.46 ERA in 13.0 innings that spring.

At the plate, Roenicke finished his four-year career with a .262 batting average, recording 14 doubles, 37 runs and 45 RBI in 123 games (81 starts). Roenicke becomes the first former UCLA player under head coach John Savage to enter the major leagues.

Roenicke's uncle, Ron, played baseball at UCLA in 1977 before spending eight seasons in the major leagues (1981-1988). Roenicke's father, Gary, played 12 seasons in the majors and currently serves as a scout for the Baltimore Orioles.
