The 25th-ranked USC Trojans edged out the 15th-ranked Bruins on Friday afternoon in Pac-10 swim and dive action by a score of 158-142. Although it was a loss for UCLA (5-4, 2-4 Pac-10), the Bruins had some very impressive performances in the water highlighted by Anna Poteete's triple event win.
USC picks up five Lexus Gauntlet points with the win giving them a 45 to 12.5 point lead over the Bruins.
On the day, the Bruins won five events while there were 17 season-best and 13 lifetime-best performances during the meet.
Poteete, just a junior, had an incredibly strong day as she won the 200 freestyle with a lifetime and season-best swim of 1:48.14, the 50 free (22.76) and 100 free (49.43). All three times were NCAA "B" qualifiers, but she has swam faster in the 50 and 100 free already this season.
On the one meter board, junior Marisa Samaniego tallied a win for the Bruins as she scored 297.22, which is just over two points shy of her season-best (299.10).

In the 200 breaststroke, senior Nicolette Teo achieved the "A" standard with her second-place swim of 2:13.11. That time is also a season and lifetime-best mark. Teo was also second in the 100 breast in a time of 1:01.74. That time was also an NCAA automatic mark, but she has a better time of 1:01.57 from earlier in the season.
The Bruin freshmen posted some very impressive performances in their first dual meet with USC as many of them swam lifetime or season-best marks. In the 1650 freestyle, Dani Milligan swam a 20-second season-best, and improved on her own lifetime-best by 15 seconds as she finished second in a time of 16:30.03. Sam Vanden Berge also dropped 20 seconds off her season-best and set a new lifetime-best by 12 seconds (16:30.81) to finish third overall. Both times were NCAA "B" qualifiers. Kelly Colligan swam season and lifetime-best marks in both the 50 (23.91) and 100 free (50.72) to finish second and third respectively in those events.
Emily Bibb swam a season and lifetime-best in the 500 free (4:49.36) and a season-best in the 200 free (1:48.18) to finish second in both events. Those times are also NCAA "B" qualifiers. Lauren Hall added a season and lifetime-best swim in the 500 free (4:51.32) as she placed fourth overall in that event. The time is also a "B" qualifier.
Junior Brittany Hill scored a season and lifetime-best of 272.48 on three meter as she finished second overall to lead the Bruins on that event.
Up next for the Bruins will be the Pac-10 Championships. The swimmers will compete in Long Beach February 27-March 1, while the divers compete in Federal Way, WA February 28-March 1.
