No. 11 USC Edges No. 19 UCLA, 4-3 in Women's Tennis

March 8, 2007

LOS ANGELES - The No. 19 UCLA women's tennis team came close but couldn't quite pull off the upset over No. 11 USC on Thursday, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Women of Troy at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 8-5 overall, while USC improves to 9-2. Since it is the first meeting between the two teams this season, the match does not count in the Pac-10 standings.

USC took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. After the Women of Troy took an 8-3 victory at court No. 1, the Bruins answered back with an 8-4 win at court No. 3. The point was decided at the No. 2 position, where USC's Judy DeVera and Amanda Fink bested UCLA's Ashley Joelson/Yasmin Schnack, 8-4.

The Bruins fought back in singles play, evening the score at 1-1 when Schnack posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Fink at court No. 3. The Women of Troy took the lead again when 13th-ranked Lindsey Nelson rallied from a set down to defeat No. 24 Riza Zalameda, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the top court. Joelson tied things up for UCLA once again by taking a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Anca Anastasiu at court No. 4.

USC, however, would take the next two matches to clinch the victory. Julie Smekodub gave the Women of Troy a 3-2 lead when she registered a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Elizabeth Lumpkin at court No. 6. The match was clinched at court No. 2, as UCLA's Tracy Lin was forced to retire due to injury. USC's Sarah Fansler was leading 6-4, 3-6, 5-2 at the time of Lin's retirement.

In the final match of the afternoon, UCLA's Alex McGoodwin recorded a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Dianne Matias at court No. 5.

The victory earns USC 2.5 points in the race for the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy. UCLA is leading the all-sport competition 47.5 to 20.

UCLA will be in action again next Tuesday, hosting No. 25 Baylor at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m.
