LOS ANGELES - Catcher Steve Rodriguez went 3-for-3 with a career-best three runs and his first collegiate home run to lead the UCLA baseball team to a 5-2 victory over No. 17 Oregon State on Sunday afternoon at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins secured a Pac-10 series victory after having won, 7-5, on Friday evening.

Third baseman Tyler Rahmatulla was the only other player for UCLA (19-21, 11-7 Pac-10) to record multiple hits, as he notched a career-high three hits in four at-bats.

Right-hander Charles Brewer (2-4) earned the victory, limiting the Beavers to two runs and six hits in five innings. Brewer notched four strikeouts and no walks. Oregon State right-hander Jorge Reyes (5-2) absorbed the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) and six hits in six innings. Reyes registered seven strikeouts and three walks.

Left-hander Gavin Brooks recorded his team-leading seventh save, notching the final out in the ninth inning with runners aboard first and second base. UCLA's bullpen limited Oregon State (24-11, 9-6 Pac-10) to two hits in the final four innings, totaling five strikeouts and two walks. Matt Grace allowed one hit in two innings, Jason Novak scattered one base-hit in 1.2 innings and Brooks induced a fly ball for the game's final out.

The Beavers were led at the plate by shortstop Joey Wong, who went 2-for-4 with both of Oregon State's runs. Catcher Ryan Ortiz went 2-for-3 with one RBI and third baseman Stefen Romero went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Oregon State scored one run in the top of the first inning to lead 1-0. Wong led off the game with a single up the middle, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout before scoring on Romero's two-out base-hit through the middle.

UCLA responded in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run to right field by Rodriguez. The round-tripper came three pitches after Oregon State first baseman Jared Norris dropped a foul pop-up.

The Beavers added their second run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. With Wong aboard third base, Ortiz laced a two-out RBI-double inside the left field line.

UCLA took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Rodriguez led off the inning with a single, and scored after second baseman Eddie Murray singled to right field and reached third base on a fielding error by Oregon State's Michael Miller. Right fielder Justin Uribe followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Murray to tag and score from third.

The Bruins took advantage of three Oregon State errors in the seventh inning to assume a 5-2 advantage. After opening the frame with a single through the left side, Rodriguez advanced to third base on an error during a failed pickoff attempt. With two outs, center fielder Blair Dunlap reached safely on a bunt and dropped throw at first base by Romero, who moved from third to first earlier in the game. First baseman Cody Decker followed with a single to left, and the throw back to the infield by Rob Folsom sailed toward the UCLA dugout, allowing Dunlap to score.

With the victory, UCLA (11-7 Pac-10) moves into third place in the Pac-10 standings, percentage points behind Washington State (10-5 Pac-10). The Bruins trail first-place Arizona State (15-3 Pac-10) by four games.

UCLA returns to action against Long Beach State on Tuesday, April 28. Game time at Jackie Robinson Stadium is 6 p.m., and admission for adults and children to Tuesday's contest costs two dollars. A live audio broadcast of the non-conference game will be available for free at uclabruins.com.
