LOS ANGELES - Three UCLA men's tennis players won a pair of matches on Thursday to earn spots in Friday's quarterfinals at the 55th Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Alex Brigham picked up the biggest upset of the day, as he upset second-seeded Emilio Gomez of USC, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the second round. Brigham opened the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win over UCSD's Sam Ling.
Joining Brigham in the quarterfinals will be third-seeded Clay Thompson and fourth-seeded Warren Hardie. Thompson downed LMU's Robin Kiyabu, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Concordia's Bruno Santarelli. After beating LMU's Daniel Simko in the first round, Hardie had a dog fight in his second-round match with Pepperdine's David Sofaer. Hardie fought off multiple match points in a second-set tiebreaker to eventually win, 2-6, 7-6(11), 6-3.
