Senior setter Nellie Spicer (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) of the UCLA women's volleyball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 15-21.
Spicer surpassed the 5,000 career assists mark and was named Most Valuable Player of the Northwestern Wildcat Classic as the fourth-ranked Bruins posted a 4-0 record last week with wins over Cal State Northridge, Virginia, Georgetown and Northwestern. It was Spicer's third tournament MVP honor of the season after earning the award at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic and the Nevada Tournament. Spicer reached the milestone assists mark in Friday's second match against Georgetown, posting 33 assists and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season and 53rd of her career. Earlier on Friday, Spicer had 37 assists and four service aces in a sweep of Virginia. In both matches, Spicer set the Bruins to more than a .350 hitting percentage.
Spicer closed out the tournament on Saturday with an impressive performance against Northwestern. The senior had another double-double with 47 assists and 13 digs for her fourth double-double and 54th of her career, also adding seven kills. Spicer opened the week with 33 assists, nine digs and four blocks in a road victory at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday. She set the Bruins to a .400 hitting percentage against the Matadors.
For the week, Spicer averaged 11.54 assists and 2.92 digs per set. She also set the Bruins to a .325 hitting percentage in four matches. Spicer leads the Bruins with 10.71 assists per set and is tied for second with 2.35 digs per set.
This is Spicer's second UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and fourth of her career.
