Baker Tosses Complete-Game, Two-Hit Shutout as Bruin Softball Beats Southern Utah

March 13, 2007

Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - Whitney Baker retired the first 12 batters of the game and scattered just two hits over seven innings as 12th-ranked UCLA defeated Southern Utah on Tuesday afternoon at Easton Stadium, 1-0.

UCLA improves to 22-6 on the year while SUU falls to 10-15.

Neither team threatened until the fourth inning, when UCLA put runners on first and second with one out as Lisa Dodd and Megan Langenfeld drew walks. However, a Jaisa Creps flyout and Julie Burney strikeout ended the frame.

Meanwhile, Bruin freshman hurler Whitney Baker was perfect through four innings before SUU put a runner on first base via a Dodd error. The Thunderbirds broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the fifth inning to give SUU two runners on with two outs before Baker got a grounder to end the threat. Southern Utah's only other hit of the game came with one out in the sixth inning.

UCLA had a runner in scoring position with one out again in the fifth inning as Tara Henry reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. Once again, SUU pitcher Marissa Gonzalez got out of the jam, retiring Krista Colburn and Dodd to end the inning.

The Bruins finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth as Jodie Legaspi opened the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a grounder by Langenfeld. Creps came through with a single up the middle to score Legaspi with what proved to be the game's only run.

Baker (3-1) fanned a career-high 11 batters without issuing a walk in the complete-game, two-hit shutout. It also marks the second-straight start in which Baker has tossed a complete-game shutout following her two-hitter against Canisius last weekend. She also extends her scoreless streak to 19 innings, dating back to the third inning against Loyola-Chicago on March 4.

SUU's Gonzalez (4-5) took the loss, scattering four hits and allowing just one run with four walks and six strikeouts.

UCLA now takes 12 days off for winter quarter final exams. The Bruins hit the field again on Sun., March 25, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. UCLA is back home on Tue., March 27, for a 1 p.m. single game against UCSB before opening Pac-10 play at Easton Stadium that weekend (March 30-April 1) against Arizona State and Arizona.
