Four Bruin Soccer Players Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Honors

Nov. 20, 2006

Four UCLA men's soccer players were honored for their classroom achievements, being selected to the Pac-10 All-Academic teams. Senior goalkeeper Eric Reed earned second-team honors, while junior defenders Greg Folk and Mike Zaher and sophomore forward Maxwell Griffin received honorable mention acclaim.

Reed, who holds a 3.28 cumulative grade point average in Religious Studies, was named to the second team for the second consecutive year. He was also an honorable mention selection in 2004 as a sophomore. Reed, an honorable mention All-Pac-10 honoree this year, has posted two shutouts in NCAA Tournament play and five overall. He holds a 1.05 goals against average (GAA) this season and a 0.78 career GAA.

Folk and Zaher earned their second consecutive honorable mention nods. The defensive duo has been outstanding for the Bruins this season, leading the team to five shutouts, including two in the NCAA Tournament. Folk leads the team in minutes played with 1,945 and has started in all 21 games, scoring one goal and two assists. Zaher, a first-team All-Pac-10 honoree, has started in 20 games and ranks second on the team in minutes played with 1,894. He has scored two goals with two assists. Griffin was UCLA's leading scorer prior to his season-ending injury on Sept. 22. He scored five goals with one assist in just eight games.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
