SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore Grace Murray scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch, as the third-ranked Bruins defeated #12 Missouri 2-1 on Sunday at the San Diego Classic at the USD Softball Complex.
The Bruins win their 13th in a row, improving to 18-2 on the season. UCLA will face San Diego in its final game of the weekend at approximately 2 p.m. The Tigers drop to 12-2.
Each team scored a run in the first inning. The Tigers, the designated visiting team, scored with two outs in their first at-bat. With Andee Allen at third after posting a one-out double and advancing on a wild pitch, Micaela Minner singled up the middle to put Missouri up 1-0.
In the bottom of the first, sophomore Katie Schroeder reached after getting hit with one out and sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore recorded an infield single to short to put a pair on base. Junior Kaila Shull followed with a single up the middle to plate Schroeder and even the game at one.
From that point, the game turned into a pitcher's duel between UCLA's Whitney Baker and Missouri's Chelsea Thomas. Baker loaded the bases on walks in the fifth, but got out of the jam, striking out Gina Schneider and retiring Julie Silver on a groundout to short to end the inning. The junior went on to retire the side in order in the sixth and seventh, striking out two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, junior Julie Burney had a one-out double to right and was pinch-run for by Murray. Monica Harrison then sacrificed Murray to third. That brought up senior Amanda Kamekona, but the first pitch from Thomas was in the dirt and scooted away, allowing Murray to score the game-winning run.
Each team had three hits. Baker earned the win to improve to 6-0, giving up three hits, one run and seven walks with 10 strikeouts. Thomas allowed three hits, two runs and two walks in 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts for the Tigers.
