LOS ANGELES - Junior right-hander Garett Claypool and senior right-hander Jason Novak were selected in the 32nd and 48th rounds, respectively, on the third and final day of the 2009 MLB Draft. Claypool was chosen by the Oakland A's (963rd overall pick), and Novak was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals (1449th overall pick).

Claypool and Novak were the seventh and eighth UCLA ballplayers, respectively, to be selected in the 2009 MLB Draft. The Bruins' eight draft selections are the most for the program since 2006, when 12 players were drafted.

A resident of West Hills, Calif. and former standout at El Camino High School, Claypool has excelled the past three seasons pitching as a midweek starter and relief pitcher. He has gone 6-4 with a 3.67 ERA and four saves in 53 career appearances (21 starts, all in midweek action). Through his junior season, he has compiled 107 strikeouts and 59 saves in 125.0 career innings.

Claypool had a strong junior campaign, serving primarily as UCLA's midweek starting pitcher. He went 2-1 with a 3.46 ERA, 48 strikeouts and 11 walks in 39.0 innings, making 14 appearances (eight starts). He secured freshman All-America honors from Rivals.com in 2007, going 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA in 24 games (seven starts).

Novak, a native of Agoura, Calif., appeared in 86 games (four starts), the sixth-most pitching appearances in school history. He posted a 6-3 career record with four saves, a 4.98 ERA, 121 strikeouts and 63 walks in four seasons.

Novak went 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 19 relief appearances in 2009. A junior in 2008, Novak went 1-1 with a career-best 3.60 ERA in 20 relief outings, logging 28 strikeouts in 35.0 innings. He pitched a career-high 41.0 innings as a sophomore in 2007, going 3-0 with a 4.83 ERA and 38 strikeouts. Novak went 1-1 with a 5.35 ERA, collecting 31 strikeouts in 38.2 innings as a freshman in 2006.

Claypool and Novak join six other Bruins to have been selected in the 2009 MLB Draft - juniors Casey Haerther (L.A. Angels, 5th round), Gavin Brooks (N.Y. Yankees, 9th round), Charles Brewer (Arizona, 12th round) and Gabe Cohen (Tampa Bay, 29th round) and seniors Brendan Lafferty (Kansas City, 18th round) and Cody Decker (San Diego, 22nd round).

Major league draft selections have until Monday, August 17, to sign a professional contract.
