Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. - No. 16 UCLA and No. 22 San Diego State battled to a 1-1 tie at UCLA's Drake Stadium Friday night. Bruin freshman David Estrada scored the game's first goal in the 26th minute, but San Diego State freshman Nick Cardenas evened the score in the 30th minute.

The Bruins had the first scoring opportunities of the game, with Sal Zizzo making a shot that was saved by San Diego State Tally Hall in the 20th minute, and Jason Leopoldo drawing Hall out in the 25th minute but missing wide. At 25:52, Leopoldo nearly scored again, hitting the crossbar, but this time Estrada was right there to head the rebound in for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Less than four minutes later, San Diego State equalized on a set piece. Evan Toft sent in a corner kick that went right to Cardenas near the far post. The 6-5 defender headed the ball in for his sixth goal of the year.

In the second half, the Bruins had four shots to the Aztecs' two. Hall made saves on shots by Zizzo in the 70th minute and Kyle Nakazawa in the 85th minute, and UCLA's Brian Perk had stops on Andrew DiCicco in the 70th minute and Cardenas in the 76th minute.

The overtime period was not without dramatics. In the first overtime, at 98:08, San Diego State's Kevin Werbner had a clear shot on goal but missed wide. The first two minutes of the second overtime saw three shots. At 100:47, Perk made a one-handed save on a Toft shot. At 101:11, the Aztecs' Steve Beitashour missed wide, and at 101:46, Hall made a nice save on an Estrada shot.

UCLA finished with 12 shots to San Diego State's seven. Perk had four saves on the day, while Hall made five.

With the tie, San Diego State finishes in second place in the Pac-10 standings with a 5-2-3 league record and a 9-5-4 overall record. UCLA finishes in fourth place with a 4-3-3 league mark and 9-5-4 overall record. The Bruins wrap up regular season play on Sunday with a non-conference home game against the University of San Diego on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 pm.
