ROCHESTER, Minn. - UCLA left-handed pitcher Brendan Lafferty has been selected to play in the 2008 Northwoods League All-Star Game. Lafferty, an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection in 2008, has registered a 0.56 earned-run average and 3-0 record in three appearances (two starts) for the Mankato Moondogs.
Lafferty, a rising redshirt senior, has tallied 22 strikeouts and issued just five walks in 16.0 innings, limiting the opposition to a .115 batting average. The Riverside, Calif., resident has averaged 12.4 strikeouts per nine innings this summer.
In his first of two starts, Lafferty allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, totaling 12 strikeouts and one walk as Mankato downed Eau Claire, 8-1, on June 24. The rising senior surrendered one unearned run and four hits in eight innings on July 1, striking out eight hitters in Mankato's 4-1 victory against Madison.
The South Division's All-Stars will host their North Division counterpart at Warner Park, home of the Northwoods League's Madison Mallards on Monday, July 14. The All-Star Game will be televised live by ESPNU, as first pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m. (PT).
A stalwart out of the bullpen in 2008, Lafferty led the Bruins with 33 relief appearances. The 6-foot-4 left-hander made more appearances than any Bruin since Rob Henkel pitched in 34 games in 1997. Lafferty finished his redshirt junior campaign with 56 strikeouts, 30 walks, a 4-3 record and 3.74 ERA before capturing team most valuable pitcher honors.
Lafferty will enter the 2009 season having made 73 career appearances, tied for the 11th-highest total in program history (46 shy of the school record - 119, currently held by Bill Wenrick). In three seasons, Lafferty has compiled 85 strikeouts and 44 walks in 117.1 innings, posting a 7-6 record and 5.52 ERA.
