LOS ANGELES - The No. 7 UCLA women's tennis team posted its fourth conference shutout of the season on Friday, taking a commanding 7-0 victory over Arizona at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins improve to 16-5 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats fall to 7-15, remaining winless in league play at 0-6.
The Bruins won all three doubles matches, clinching the point when ninth-ranked Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda notched an 8-3 victory over the Wildcat duo of Claire Rietsch/Daniele Steinberg at court No. 1.
UCLA kept up the momentum in singles play, quickly registering wins on the back three courts to take an insurmountable 4-0 lead. In fact, the Bruins lost a total of just four games at the Nos. 4-6 positions. Bruin senior Elizabeth Lumpkin, ranked No. 94 nationally, clinched the win for UCLA with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Jane Huh at court No. 4. Alex McGoodwin, who didn't lose a game at court No. 5, and Anna-Viktoria Lind (court No. 6) were also winners.
The Bruins were nearly as dominant on the top three courts, where straight-set wins by Andrea Remynse and Lin put UCLA ahead 6-0. In the final match of the day, Zalameda, ranked No. 11 nationally, capped off the win for the Bruins with a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over No. 38 Danielle Steinberg.
UCLA will be in action again tomorrow, hosting No. 14 Arizona State at Noon.
