No. 2 UCLA Opens Spieker Aquatics Center With 10-4 Win Over No. 7 UC Irvine

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team registered a 10-4 victory against No. 7 UC Irvine in the first official athletic event at the Bruins' new Spieker Aquatics Center before a capacity crowd in a non-conference match on Saturday evening.

UCLA (9-1) received one pair of goals from senior Scott Davidson, sophomore Cullen Hennessy and freshman Josh Samuels. The Bruins also had one goal from juniors Ben Hohl, Jacob Murphy and Emilio Vieira and freshman Griffin White.

UC Irvine (6-4) was led by Cole Bielskis' three-goal effort.

Playing their first home match of the season, UCLA led from the start. The Bruins secured a 2-0 lead through the game's first four minutes on goals from Davidson (5:16) and Hennessy (4:06). UC Irvine sliced UCLA's advantage in half with a goal from Bielskis at the 3:13 mark. The Bruins claimed a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter, as Davidson netted his second goal of the evening with 17 seconds left in the frame.

UCLA used a 3-0 scoring run in the second quarter to extend its cushion to 6-1 by halftime. In the second period, the Bruins received goals from Samuels (4:39), Murphy (1:24) and Hohl (0:33).

The visiting Anteaters pulled their deficit to 6-2 with a strike from Bielskis just 32 seconds into the third quarter. Vieira tapped in a pass from Hennessy with 6:54 to go in the third period, before UC Irvine answered with Bielskis' third goal of the evening, pushing the score to 7-3. UCLA added its eighth goal of the night on a strike from Hennessy with 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

UC Irvine pulled to within four goals, 8-4, on a score from Tom Kruip with 2:40 to play in the match. UCLA extended its advantage with two fourth-quarter goals - from White (1:22) and Samuels (0:20).

UCLA senior goalkeeper Chay Lapin registered eight saves, before freshman Matt Rapacz tallied two saves in the game's final 5:17. UC Irvine goalkeeper Matt Johnson finished with nine stops in the cage.

The Bruins return to action at No. 1 Stanford on Saturday, Oct. 3. Game time is 10:30 a.m.
