LOS ANGELES - The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team received at least two goals from five players in a 14-7 non-conference victory over No. 9 Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Senior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen recorded a career-high 18 saves for the host Bruins (7-2).
Senior Nicole Hughes led Loyola Marymount (3-2) with four goals.
UCLA led the entire contest and scored the game's first two goals in the first 2:31. After Loyola Marymount reduced the Bruins' lead in half with a goal at the 5:01 mark in the first quarter, UCLA used a 3-0 scoring run to assume a 5-1 lead with 58 seconds to play in the opening period. The Bruins led, 5-2, after one quarter.
Trailing by a 6-2 margin with 7:28 to play in the first half, Loyola Marymount responded with a 3-0 scoring run, cutting the Bruins' advantage to 6-5 at the 2:27 mark in the second quarter.
UCLA took command of the match in the third quarter, using a 5-0 scoring run to assume an 11-5 cushion. Gandy converted on a five-meter penalty shot with 6:11 left in the quarter, Rulon added her second goal of the day at the 2:02 mark and Belden scored her second goal with 1:28 remaining. A goal by Priscilla Orozco with one second left in the third period gave UCLA a 10-5 lead.
The Bruins outscored the Lions, 4-2, in the final frame.
Loyola Marymount freshman goalkeeper Elise Ponce recorded nine saves in the cage.
The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team returns to action against No. 3 Hawai'i on Thursday, Feb. 19. Game time of the MPSF match at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center is 3 p.m.
