No. 2 UCLA Wins Both Games on First Day of NorCal Tournament

PLEASANT HILL, Calif. - The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 19 Air Force, 15-5, and No. 7 Pacific, 10-7, to advance to the semifinals of the NorCal Tournament on Saturday at Diablo Valley College. Sophomore Bret Lathrope registered a career-high four goals against Air Force, while senior Ben Hohl netted four in the win over Pacific.

UCLA (3-0) will play Stanford in a semifinal match at 12 p.m. on Sunday at California's Spieker Aquatic Complex.

In Saturday's first-round match against Air Force, senior Clay Jorth netted three goals in the win. The Bruins (2-0) also received two goals each from junior Brett Hays and sophomore Griffin White and one apiece from senior Ben Hohl, junior Cullen Hennessy and freshmen Chris Wendt and Cristiano Mirarchi.

UCLA claimed a 3-1 lead after the first quarter and led the rest of the contest. The Bruins outscored the Falcons, 4-1, in the second period to assume a 7-2 advantage at halftime. UCLA continued its assault in the third quarter, outscoring the opposition by a 5-3 margin, before blanking Air Force in the final period, 3-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Rapacz started for the Bruins, notching four saves and allowing two goals in the game's first two quarters. Junior Andrew Mesesan played the second half, logging three saves and surrendering three goals - all in the third quarter.

In the Bruins' 10-7 win over Pacific, senior Jacob Murphy and White each scored two goals. UCLA also received one goal from Lathrope and Hays.

UCLA opened a 4-1 cushion after the first quarter and led 7-2 at halftime. Pacific narrowed its deficit to three goals by the end of the game, outscoring UCLA in each of the final two quarters - 2-1 in the third and 3-2 in the fourth. The Tigers were led by Goran Tomasevic's two goals.

Rapacz netted seven saves through the first three quarters against Pacific, allowing four goals. Mesesan played in the fourth period, totaling five saves while surrendering three goals.
