BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team dropped an 11-10 decision to No. 3 USC in the championship match of the NorCal Tournament on Sunday evening at California's Spieker Aquatic Complex.
UCLA advanced to the championship match with a 10-9 win over Stanford in the semifinals earlier on Sunday.
In the title contest, UCLA was led by three goals from junior Cullen Hennessy and sophomore Josh Samuels. The Bruins (4-1) also received two goals from senior Ben Hohl and one goal from senior Jacob Murphy and freshman Cristiano Mirarchi.
USC outscored the Bruins in each of the first three quarters. The Trojans led 5-2 at halftime, expanding their margin to 8-4 at the end of three frames. UCLA closed the gap to one goal, outscoring USC, 6-3, in the final period.
This marked the second consecutive season in which UCLA finished second at the NorCal Tournament.
The Bruins return to action against Loyola Marymount in a home match on Saturday, Sept. 25. Game time at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center is slated for 7 p.m.
