LOS ANGELES - Nick Vander Tuig recorded seven strikeouts and no walks in eight innings as the No. 17 UCLA baseball team won its fifth straight game, defeating Sacramento State, 6-2, in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Vander Tuig (2-0) allowed one unearned run and six hits in his third start of the season, notching career highs with seven strikeouts and eight innings.

UCLA (7-3) was led at the plate by Kevin Kramer, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Trevor Brown, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Cody Keefer and Tyler Heineman each extended their hitting streaks to 10 games.

Tanner Mendonca (2-1) absorbed the loss for Sacramento State (4-6), allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings. Mendonca struck out three batters and issued three walks.

Eight hitters for Sacramento State each recorded one hit, with David Del Grande going 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Justin Higley went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

The Bruins led from the start, scoring three runs in the first inning. UCLA's first two batters reached on infield singles and Cody Keefer drew a walk, loading the bases. Gelalich skied a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Beau Amaral. Heineman scored from third base on a double by Brown, and Keefer advanced home on a groundout by Kramer.

Sacramento State scored one run in the top of the second inning. Del Grande reached second base on a dropped fly ball and scored on the next at-bat, as Higley grounded a base-hit into right field.

The Bruins added to their cushion with three runs in the seventh inning. Keefer lined a run-scoring single into left field, sending home Kevin Williams. With the bases loaded, Brown lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Amaral to score UCLA's fifth run of the game. Kramer followed with a two-out single up the middle, plating Keefer.

Sacramento State scored once in the ninth inning on a fielder's choice by Del Grande.

UCLA concludes its three-game series against Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m. Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 16 and under).

Game Notes: Cody Keefer and Tyler Heineman have hit safely in each of UCLA's 10 games this season ... Jeff Gelalich had a nine-game hitting streak snapped, but did reach base with a walk in the seventh inning ... Nick Vander Tuig's eight innings marked a season long for any UCLA pitcher through the first 10 games ... Ryan Deeter recorded the final three outs in the ninth inning and has pitched in nine of UCLA's 10 ballgames ... Trevor Brown has notched two hits in six of the team's last seven games.
