Berkeley, Calif. - The seventh-ranked UCLA men's tennis team notched a 4-3 victory over No. 15 California on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley. The Bruins improve to 6-2 overall, while the Bears fall to 7-2. The match did not count in the Pac-10 standings.

UCLA edged Cal for the doubles point with wins on the first and third courts to go ahead, 1-0, in the match. Alex Brigham and Holden Seguso came off the courts first as they defeated junior Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan on court three, 8-2. The Bears' No. 22-ranked team of Konigsfeldt and sophomore Nick Andrews came up with an 8-5 win over Matt Brooklyn and Amit Inbar on court two next. But UCLA's team of Haythem Abid and Nick Meister prevailed, 8-6, on the top court over Cal's No. 33-ranked duo of juniors Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini to lock up the first point of the day.

While the Bruins pulled out to a 3-0 lead in the match, Cal forced UCLA to first-set tiebreakers on three courts and stayed toe-to-toe with the Bruins much of the way. UCLA got its second point of the match when Inbar completed his 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 78 Dahan at court three and went up, 3-0, as No. 71 Abid defeated No. 31 Zerbini on the top court, 7-6, 6-3. The two combatants stayed point-for-point with each other in the first set but Abid came up with a 7-4 tiebreaker win.

No. 111 Chris Konigsfeldt put together a 6-4, 6-4 win of his own and got the Bears on the board by taking out Seguso at court two. But moments later, UCLA ended Cal's hopes of another comeback victory as No. 48 Brooklyn clinched the win with a 7-6, 6-2 match against Katsarov on court five. Andrews gave the Bears their second point as No. 96 Meister retired after trailing, 3-2, in the second set. Meister edged Andrews for the first set with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker. McLachlan ended the day with his three-set victory over Brigham at court six as he fought out a 7-3 win in the second set tiebreaker and a 10-7 win in the third-set super-tiebreaker.

UCLA is set to host No. 5 USC on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
