Los Angeles - The UCLA baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision to Washington on Saturday afternoon, snapping the Bruins' seven-game winning streak in the series finale. Right fielder Gabe Cohen led the Bruins with a 3-for-5 effort, and designated hitter Brandon Crawford (2-for-4) collected his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season.
Bruin left-hander Gavin Brooks (3-4) allowed five runs (three earned) off seven hits in 5 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss. The freshman from Vista, Calif., struck out three and walked one. Huskie left-hander Nick Hagadone (3-1) held UCLA to three runs (one earned) off seven hits while recording four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of relief.
Washington (16-13, 5-4 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when center fielder Michael Burgher scored from third on a double-play groundout. The Bruins (15-15, 5-1 Pac-10) answered with one run in the bottom of the third inning. Center fielder Tim Murphy singled down the right-field line, took second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Eddie Murray. Murphy later scored on an infield single by designated hitter Brandon Crawford.
The Huskies used two home runs to assume a 5-1 advantage. Left fielder Ty Rasmussen belted a solo home run to left in the fifth inning. With runners at first and second in the top of the sixth, third baseman Matt Hague hit a home run over the left-field wall, handing the Huskies a four-run cushion.
UCLA added two runs in the sixth inning to cut Washington's lead to 5-3. Right fielder Gabe Cohen singled up the middle to lead off the frame, and left fielder Mickey Weisser reached on a base-hit to right. Cohen scored from second when catcher Ryan Babineau reached on a fielder's choice and took second on a throwing error. Murray delivered an RBI-single to left, plating Babineau from second.
Each team scored once in the seventh, and Washington used three runs in the eighth inning to build a 9-4 lead.
The Bruins return to action Tuesday, April 10, at home against UC Irvine at 6 p.m. Tuesday's contest marks the first meeting between both schools in 2007. Last season, UCLA won both regular-season games against the Anteaters before defeating UC Irvine, 3-2, in the NCAA Tournament's Malibu Regional (June 2).
