Senior Henry Hagenbuch finished first at the UCSD Triton Invitational to lead the Bruin men to their third meet title of the season. Hagenbuch set a 10k course record in the win as the race came down to a photo finish. The Bruins scored 19 points, with the second-place team, UCSD, scoring 74.
The final 200m of the race course is contested on the UCSD track, and with 200m to go, Fresno State's Eric Garcia held the lead. Hagenbuch closed with 70m to go and finished .02 ahead of Garcia to win in a time of 32:43.1.
"I was really happy to see this team execute our early race plan so well," said head coach Eric Peterson. "The course is very narrow and in order to be successful early on in this race, you have to get out and establish a front running position. All of our top guys were there throughout the race."
The Bruins had six runners including Hagenbuch finish in the top-10 on Saturday - Kent Morikawa, 3rd (33:04.4); Dylan Knight, 4th (33:22.6); Marlon Patterson, 5th (33:22.6); Spencer Knight, 6th (33:39.3); Jun Reichl, 8th (33:53.0).
"The Fresno State runner deserves some credit because he made a break around the 4-mile mark and opened up a 15-second gap on Kent, Henry and Marlon. It was great to see Henry close that gap and win the race. It was a great win for Henry and it was awesome to see him lead this team to another victory. It's our third victory in four races and it's great to see. We are running several young athletes and it speaks well to the future success of this team."
