Claire Rethmeier picked up her regional qualifier in the 5000m on Friday evening at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational as she ran a lifetime-best by nearly 10 seconds (16:46.12) to finish second overall.
In the invite section of the javelin, freshman Tara Ross finished sixth with a mark of 143-4.
Sophomore Nicole Leach won the 100m in a time of 11.88, while junior DeShanta Harris finished second in the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.24. Sophomore Lauren Jirges ran a lifetime-best in the 1500m, finishing fourth in a time of 4:30.62.
In the pole vault, freshman Lindsay Regan tied for fourth with a clearance of 11-11.75, equaling her season-best vault mark.
Competition continues on Saturday with the invitational section of the meet. One heat or flight of each event will be contested, while a special recognition ceremony for the seniors and the namesakes of the meet, Rafer Johnson and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, will also be held during the meet.
