LOS ANGELES - Senior Krsto Sbutega, junior Scott Swanson and sophomore Ben Hohl each recorded a hat trick to help lead the No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 9 UC Irvine, 12-10, Friday afternoon in an MPSF match at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

The Bruins (12-5, 4-2 MPSF) never trailed against the visiting Anteaters (9-10, 0-4 MPSF), outscoring UC Irvine in each quarter. UCLA also received goals from juniors Scott Davidson and Tyler Jemmett and sophomore Jacob Murphy.

UC Irvine was led by juniors Greg Enloe and Thomas Kruip, who each netted three goals.

UCLA raced to an early 2-0 advantage after goals by Swanson and Murphy and led, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter. UC Irvine knotted the contest at 4-4 on a goal by Kruip just 34 seconds into the second frame.

Both teams traded goals, and with the score tied, 5-5, Hohl registered his first goal of the day, sending UCLA ahead by a 6-5 margin. The Bruins jumped to a three-goal lead (8-5) on a strike by Jemmett with 1:40 remaining in the second half.

UCLA led 8-6 at halftime, as UC Irvine sophomore Brandon Johnson reduced the Bruins' margin to two goals with a penalty shot at 1:12 in the second quarter.
