Sixth-Inning Outburst Lifts Fifth-Ranked Bruins to Win Over Long Beach State

March 26, 2010

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - With the game tied at three, the Bruins scored eight times in the bottom of the sixth to record their 11th mercy-rule victory of the season, as fifth-ranked UCLA defeated Long Beach State 11-3 on Friday at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins improve to 22-4 on the season, while the 49ers fall to 16-14.

UCLA pounded out 11 hits, with senior Megan Langenfeld, sophomores Samantha Camuso and Andrea Harrison and freshman B.B. Bates all recording two-hit contests. Seven different Bruins had a hit. Andrea Harrison and juniors GiOnna DiSalvatore and Monica Harrison each drove in a pair of runs.

The Bruins jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a score in the bottom of the first. Bates reached on a slap single back to the pitcher and advanced to second on a fielding error by first baseman Christina Schallig. After Monica Harrison sacrificed Bates to third, DiSalvatore drove her in with a sacrifice fly to left to put UCLA on the board.

UCLA added two more in the fourth on one swing of the bat. With one out, Langenfeld singled to left and was pinch-run for by junior Grace Murray, who came home on Andrea Harrison's fourth homer of the year to left-center.

The 49ers rallied to tie it with two in the fifth and one in the sixth. In the fifth, Long Beach scored a pair of unearned runs. With one out, Brandy Reyes reached on an error and moved to third on a double by Schallig. Liz Javier followed with a single to left to plate Reyes to make it 3-1. The 49ers added a second run in the inning when Caitrin DeBaun reached on another Bruin error, allowing Schallig to score.

In the top of the sixth, the 49ers tied it. With one out, Nalani St. Germain walked and moved to second on a groundout. After Reyes walked and St. Germain moved to third on a wild pitch, Schallig singled to left-center to plate St. Germain and even the score.

But the Bruins exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the mercy rule. With one out, Langenfeld walked and moved to third on a double to left-center by Andrea Harrison. Camuso then singled to right to score Langenfeld, and when DeBaun misplayed the ball in the outfield, Harrison came in to make it 5-3. Senior Julie Burney followed with a single to left, and one out later, freshman Dani Yudin reached base via a wild pitch on a dropped third strike to load the bases.

The score became 6-3 when with Bates at the plate, Camuso came home on an illegal pitch, as the other two runners moved into scoring position. Bates ended up walking to re-load the bases and Monica Harrison drove in two with a double to center, with Bates also coming around on a throwing error by center fielder Bridgette Pagano to make it 9-3. DiSalvatore followed with a double to right-center to plate Harrison to make it 10-3 and a Langenfeld single to left-center to score DiSalvatore gave the Bruins an 11-3 victory.

Junior Donna Kerr started for the Bruins and allowed two unearned runs in five innings, striking out seven and giving up four hits and four walks. Langenfeld came in the game to start the sixth, and despite giving up the tying run, became the pitcher of record after the Bruins' eight-run outburst to improve to 4-1 on the season. She walked two and gave up one hit and one run in her inning of work.

The Bruins are back on the field on Saturday when they host UNLV in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Gametracker will be available at UCLABruins.com.
