Through Day 1 of competition at the MPSF Championships, the women's track and field team leads the field in team scoring (45.5 pts.). The Bruins were able to build a lead at the Dempsey Indoor Facility courtesy of two event victories, as well as scoring results in four of the seven events scored on Friday. The men currently sit in sixth (16 pts.).

The first victory for the women came from Allison Koressel in the pole vault (13-5/4.09m). Koressel's ten-point performance was one of four Bruin scoring results in the women's pole vault Friday. Natasha Kolbo and Courtney Reginato tied for sixth (12-11/3.94) in the event, and were able to claim 2.5 points each. Finally, Liz Goodrich finished eighth to give the Bruin women another half-point.

Tatum Souza was the second Bruin to win her event, taking ten points in the pentathlon (4,023 pts.). Souza finished in the top five for all five events, including a first place finish in the 60m hurdles (8.48). Again, multiple Bruins had top finishes in the pentathlon. Alexis Walker (3,710 pts.) and Kimmie Conner (3,658 pts.) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, to give the Bruins another three points combined.

The women's long jump was another event wherein the Bruins had two scoring athletes. Kylie Price, the nation's sixth seeded long jumper, took second place in the event (20-9.75/6.34m) to give the Bruins eight points in the team category. Maya Brown contributed four points, as she finished fifth (18-10.75/5.76m).

Finally, the Bruin women also captured much needed team points in senior Katja Goldring's fourth place finish (16:33.28) in the 5,000m event.

The men also had bright spots Friday in Seattle. Through six events, the Bruins have one event victory and several scoring performances.

The men' distance medley team, consisting of Daniel Herrera, Pete Lauderdale, Nick Hartle and Ferdinand Edman, claimed first place (9:40.18). For all except Lauderdale, this was the athletes' first conference competition as a Bruin in the track and field season.

Two Bruins scored in the men's 5,000m race, as Lane Werley (13:57.08) finished fourth, followed by David McDonald (14:08.48) in eighth. Watch Werley's interview with Flotrack here.

The action continues Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in day two of the MPSF Championships.
