Midland, Texas -The UCLA women's tennis team had two players advance to the quarterfinals of singles play Friday at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas.
Bruin junior Elizabeth Lumpkin and sophomore Ashley Joelson each won two singles matches to stay alive in the tournament. Lumpkin began the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alanna Rodgers of Rice. She followed that up with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Ana Blagadarova or Texas A&M. Joelson was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over New Mexico's Maria Sotirchof in the first round. She later advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win against Rice's Julie Chao.
Next up for Lumpkin is a match with New Mexico's Ola Abou-Zekry. Joelson will face USC's Judy DeVera.
Jeremy Drean is the lone UCLA men's player competing in the tournament. He defeated Brett Rodgers of the Air Force Academy, 6-1, 6-4 before falling to Texas Tech's Bojan Szumanski, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.
