Head men's track and field coach Mike Maynard has announced the signing of six student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent. Cody Crampton, Jonah Diaz, Nicholas Hartle, Blake Selig, Connor Stark and Justin Unno have signed on to join the Bruins this fall.
"While we are certainly not finished at this point, the coaches and I are extremely pleased with the results of our NLI signing day thus far," said Maynard. "The future looks bright, as we have added some great new talent to the Bruin family."
Nick Hartle (Centennial HS/Las Vegas, NV) was the Nevada Gatorade Athlete of the Year and a standout student in the classroom with a 4.0 gpa. He is a middle distance specialist with top 2011 times of 1:49.91 in the 800m and 4:00.56 in the 1500m.
"Nick is the cornerstone of this current recruiting class," noted Maynard. "His speed and range fit perfectly with coach Johnny Gray's training philosophy. He has a huge upside potential. Although his performances thus far in his career are impressive, he is relatively new to runnning, and has a lot of room to grow into his talent. Nick adds to an already great stable of young middle distance runners on the squad, and will help us continue the excellence in middle distance as Cory Primm had during his tenure."
Jonah Diaz (Palos Verdes HS/Palos Verdes Estates, CA) is a local long distance talent who had a top 3200m time of 8:58.28 in 2011.
"Jonah adds depth to an already talented and young Bruin distance crew," said Maynard. "He ran sub 9:00 in the 3200m last year as a junior and promises to be one of the best in the country in that event. He will be an impact in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track."
Justin Unno (Palos Verdes HS/Palos Verdes Estates, CA) is teammates with Diaz and also a distance runner specializing in the middle distance events. In 2011, he had a top mile time of 4:20.19, top 1600m time of 4:16.79 and a 3200m mark of 9:26.77.
"Justin is a true miler, who has shown range from the 800 through the 3200m," said Maynard. "He will join his high school teammate Jonah Diaz as he becomes a Bruin."
Cody Crampton (Canyon HS/Anaheim, CA) is a high jump specialist with a top mark of 6-11 in 2011.
"Cody is an exciting young talent in the high jump," noted Maynard "His explosive growth in performance as a junior last season underscores the depth of untapped potential."
Blake Selig (Rio Mesa HS/Oxnard, CA) is a sprinter and long jumper with top marks from 2011 of 23-8.50, 10.73 in the 100m and 21.72 in the 200m.
"Blake is a talented sprinter/jumper who has yet to show the extent of his true talent," said Maynard. "He will make an immediate impact in the long jump, and likely develop into one of the top Bruin sprinters."
Connor Stark (Oak Park HS/Oak Park, CA) is a pole vaulter with a top mark of 16-1.
"Connor is another great pole vaulter who will join a long tradition of great Bruin vaulters developed under coach Anthony Curran," noted Maynard. "He is one of the top returning vaulters in California and will add depth and quality to a traditionally strong event for the Bruin Track and Field team."
