LOS ANGELES - Senior Courtney Mathewson registered a game-high four goals to lead the No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 3 USC, 8-7, Friday evening at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium. The Bruins (21-0, 7-0 MPSF) handed the host Trojans (12-5, 5-1 MPSF) their first home loss since 2002, snapping a 42-game win streak at their home pool.
Mathewson broke a 7-7 tie with her fourth goal of the night with 2:31 remaining in the MPSF match, allowing UCLA to run its undefeated streak to 29 games (dating back to last season).
The Bruins raced to an early lead, converting on their first two 6-on-5 advantages, first from Mathewson and second from senior Brittany Rowe. Mathewson added her second goal of the evening with 3:28 to play in the first quarter, handing UCLA a 3-0 lead.
USC's first goal of the match came on a 6-on-5 strike from Veronika Bartunkova, cutting UCLA's lead to 3-1 with under one minute to play in the opening quarter. Junior Katie Rulon's goal in the second quarter handed the Bruins a 4-1 cushion, before Mathewson's third goal gave UCLA a 5-1 lead.
The Bruins led 5-2 at haltime. Both teams traded two goals in the third quarter, as UCLA carried a 7-4 lead into the final quarter.
A goal by USC's Forel Davies with 5:50 to play in the game cut the Bruins' advantage to 7-5. The host Trojans added two more goals to tie the contest - their sixth goal with 4:49 remaining and their seventh goal with 3:47 to play.
The top-ranked Bruins return to action in Honolulu, Hawaii, facing the Canadian National Team on Wednesday, March 26 before facing Hawai'i, March 28, in an MPSF contest.
