Costa Mesa, Calif. - UCLA freshman men's tennis player Dennis Mkrtchian lived up to his top seeding at last week's Costa Mesa Intercollegiate Classic, winning six-straight matches to claim the singles title at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
Mkrtchian, who dropped just one set in six matches, downed unseeded Alex Bouillin of UC Santa Barbara, 7-6, 6-3 in Friday's singles final. He had previously downed fourth-seeded Denis Nguyen of Harvard, 6-2, 6-3 in Thursday's semifinals. Mkrtchian's closest match of the tournament came in the quarterfinals where he dropped the first set to San Diego State's Derek Siddiqui before recovering for a 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory.
UCLA's Alex Brigham was also in the tournament, however he fell in the second round to second-seeded Greg Scott of UCSB, 6-3, 7-5.
