CARY, N.C. (AP) - Casey Nogueira scored in the 84th minute to break a scoreless tie and help North Carolina beat UCLA 2-0 on Friday in the first game of the NCAA Women's College Cup.

The freshman scored from about 30 yards out after taking a pass from Yael Averbuch in front of the box on the left side and juking past a UCLA defender. Nogueira beat Bruins goalkeeper Valerie Henderson just inside the right post. North Carolina tacked on an insurance goal two minutes later.

The Tar Heels (26-1) will play for their 18th national championship Sunday against either Notre Dame or Florida State.

Both teams had scoring chances in a hard-fought first half, but neither could convert.

North Carolina, which was averaging a tournament-best five goals through its first four NCAA tournament contests, kept the pressure on UCLA's stingy defense.

Averbuch, who led Carolina with 16 goals entering the game, reeled off four shots in the half, but the Bruins (21-3) prevented the Tar Heels from getting any open shots.

Junior Danesha Adams led the Bruins with three shots, including one of the Bruins' two shots on goal.

In the Tar Heels' last trip to the College Cup in 2003, they beat UCLA 3-0 in the semifinals at Cary's SAS Soccer Park en route to their 17th championship. The Bruins have been back to the College Cup each year since but are still looking for their first title.
