Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 2 California, 4-3, in its second game of the day at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday evening.

KK Clark scored two of the Bruins' four goals, while Sarah Orozco and Kelly Ronimus each added one goal as UCLA (5-0) handed California its first loss in 11 matches this season.

Earlier in the afternoon, UCLA received two goals each from Clark and Ronimus to defeat Hawaii, 6-5.

Against California, Ronimus scored the game-winning goal with 3:36 to play in the fourth quarter, breaking a 3-3 tie.

"I'm very proud of the way we fought and played defense in order to get two wins today," head coach Brandon Brooks said. "It's obvious that we have to get better offensively, but to get through today with two wins is excellent."

California (10-1) received two goals from Breda Vosters and one from Tiera Schroeder.

UCLA never trailed in the match against California, taking a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. Clark got the Bruins on the board just nine seconds into the contest, and Orozco helped UCLA double its margin with a goal at the 3:02 mark in the opening frame.

California scored one goal in each of the second and third quarters to tie the contest, 2-2, heading into the final period. Schroeder scored with 5:08 to play before halftime, while Vosters found the back of the cage with 4:41 left in the third quarter.

UCLA gained a 3-2 advantage on a goal from Clark with 6:18 to play in the final period. California tied the match, 3-3, on a goal from Vosters with 4:46 left in the match.

Ronimus snapped the 3-3 deadlock with a goal at the 3:36 mark in the final quarter.

"We got big goals when we needed them and big stops when it counted most, and those are solid blocks to build on," Brooks said.

UCLA goalkeeper Caitlin Dement totaled nine saves in the cage. California's Lindsay Dorst was credited with seven stops.

UCLA will face No. 12 Michigan (3-4) on Sunday morning. Game time at Stanford's Baker Pool is slated for 9:10 a.m. The Bruins will play one more game in the afternoon against Stanford, USC or San Jose State.
