Nellie Spicer Added to U.S. National Training Team Roster

Jan. 28, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team Head Coach "Jenny" Lang Ping announced on Monday that UCLA setter Nellie Spicer has accepted an offer to train with Team USA at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Spicer is the 11th player from an invitation-only tryout held Jan. 7-12 to gain a training spot with the U.S. Women's National Team and is the second UCLA player to earn a roster spot. Former Bruin Rachell Johnson accepted an offer to join the team last week and will begin training on Jan. 29. Spicer will arrive on Feb. 18 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center for her first official workout.

A two-time, first-team AVCA All-American, Spicer, who also earned first-team All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-10 honors last year, led the Bruins, was third in the Pac-10 and 25th in the nation with 12.92 assists per game in her junior season. She was also fourth on the team with 3.07 digs per game. Spicer had 22 double-doubles on the year, producing at least 50 assists in a match 14 times. During the postseason, Spicer averaged 13.79 assists and 4.00 digs per game in four tournament matches. She had a career-high 25 digs to go along with 59 assists in the NCAA Regional final against Stanford, going on to earn Regional All-Tournament honors. Spicer also had at least 55 assists and double figures in digs in the second-round win against Clemson and the Regional semifinal victory versus Oregon.

U.S. Women's National Training Team athletes will compete this spring for tournament roster spots this summer. Team USA earned its berth into the 2008 Olympic Games by finishing third at the FIVB World Cup in November 2007.
